Spider Firsts Events

Every semester events for first-generation students are organized by the Office of Common Ground. Through socials, dinners, study breaks, and information sessions, we strive to help students build a sense of community with other first-gen students, faculty, and staff, and become familiar with the resources that will help ensure their success. Check the events calendar or join our Facebook group for more information.

New First-Generation Student Welcome Dinner
Tuesday, September 20, 6 pm, Richmond Room
A special evening is planned for all new first-year and transfer first-generation students. While meeting each other, you’ll eat with upperclassmen Spider Firsts and learn from their experiences on campus. Then enjoy brief talks by a student and faculty member on their first-gen experiences. Registration is required.
Spider Firsts Fall Break
Sunday and Monday, October 9 and 10

Not going home for fall break? We’ve got you covered! Join other Spider Firsts for some yummy meals and interesting conversation. We’ll head off-campus to explore the Folk Festival if the weather cooperates or the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts if it doesn't. Then we will get a meal together and explore Richmond’s famous restaurant scene. On Monday we’ll meet for lunch on campus with some of Richmond’s most engaging and supportive campus staff. It's an informal way to meet more campus resources over yet another delicious meal. Register by October 3, for one or both events. Additional excursions into the city have been planned by the CCE which you can also register for here. All expenses paid for by the Spider Firsts program.
