Thanksgiving on Campus
Not heading off campus for the Thanksgiving holiday? You're not alone. Lots of students live too far away to go home for such a short break, and some even choose to stay and study rather than spend their time travelling. The campus is generally quite quiet, though, with no dining services open between Wednesday evening and Saturday, and all offices closed as the school shuts down the for holiday weekend. If order to make sure students feel some sense of community over this time, and have a hot meal and a chance to get off-campus, Common Ground has been coordinating Thanksgiving services since 2012.
Join us for Dinner
Once again Common Ground, in partnership with the Chaplaincy and Dining Services, will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving Day dinner. This year it will be in The Cellar at 5:00 pm on Weddnesday, November 23, after all the campus dining facilities have closed. Staff, faculty, and students are invited to volunteer to help us heat and serve the meal, which is all prepared ahead of time by Dining Services, or to join us if they would like. Everyone who wants to dine with us must preregister to attend by completing this form.
Transportation will be provided on Friday, November 25 to Short Pump for the annual American tradition of Black Friday, the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season and a day known for its large discount shopping opportunities. A 25 person shuttle will leave campus at 12 noon, 2:00pm and 4:00 pm, and return from Short Pump at 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. International Education and Transportation Services fund this service.
Serving a meal on the Thanksgiving holiday takes many hands but it is a true labor of love. Please complete this form if you'd like to help.
Cooking Your Own Meals
If you don't have access to a microwave in your room or hall, one will be available on each side of campus for heating up food over the break. One will be located in the Whitehurst Game Room, and one will be located in the Westhampton Living Room. We appreciate your efforts to keep the areas clean for others who wish to use them.
If purchasing food while the dining halls will be difficult, and you worry you will not have the funds for healthy meals over the break, please contact Lisa Miles in Common Ground at firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
A Facebook group has been created in order to help students find other people who will be staying on campus. Find friends to hang out with, or who may have resources, like a car or an apartment kitchen.
