UR Comes Out is a celebration of LGBTQ History Month that occurs each October.
In October 2013 we welcomed Judy Shepard and Southerners On New Ground. In 2012, events included "Woman Talk: From Girlhood to Motherhoood" with Staceyann Chin; the Big Queer Party featuring Brandon Hiltons' Frozen Heart Tour; and "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Gender" with S. Bear Bergman.

Safe Zone Ally Training5:00 PM - 8:00 PMSafe Zone educates members of the University community about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) issues to create a network of allies who, together with members of the LGBTQ community, work to create a community of safety and full inclusion for all its members. Icebreakers Meeting - October5:00 PM - 7:00 PMIcebreakers is a confidential student run discussion group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer students, as well as students who have questions about sexual and/or gender identity. Icebreakers is a safe space for students to discuss issues of coming out, finding friends, or questions around identity. Two trained students run each meeting (at least one of which is always of a queer person of color).Icebreakers is also a confidential support network for students. Students can confidentially reach out to a peer Icebreakers facilitator by e-mailing email@example.com.
Forming Families: Adoption and Assisted Reproductive Technology Law in Virginia6:00 PM - 7:30 PM“Forming Families: Adoption and Assisted Reproductive Technology Law in Virginia” will inform attorneys, law students, and the public about the current legal landscape affecting same-sex couples looking to build families in the Commonwealth. This program will also look toward the future of Virginia family law based on the possible outcomes of pending court cases. This event is sponsored by the Equality Alliance.
Free HIV Testing1:00 PM - 5:00 PMFree HIV Testing available thanks to Fan Free Clinic and the Office of Common Ground. Know your status! Every student who speaks to an HIV Counselor will have a chance to enter to win a $50.00 VISA gift card.
Chaz Barracks6:00 PM - 7:30 PMLearn about Chaz's coming out journey, international service experiences, and his work as a contributing author and creator of IAMMYLIFE.org (http://www.iammylife.org/). This event is free and open to the public.
Queer Healthy Love Workshop5:00 PM - 6:00 PMThis fun, interactive workshop will cover positive information and skills that you can put into practice in your relationships and share with others. Topics covered will include boundaries, expectations, negotiation, and much more! This is a safe space open to anyone who is interested in building healthy relationships in their own lives or in their community. The tools we will share are useful for all kinds of relationships. Couples are welcome but it is not necessary to be in a relationship to attend. Facilitated by Common Ground and the Virginia Anti-Violence Project.
