Thanksgiving on Campus

Staying on campus for the Thanksgiving holiday? You're not alone. Lots of students live too far away to go home for such a short break, and some even choose to stay and study rather than spend their time traveling. The campus is generally quite quiet, though, with no dining services open between Wed. evening and Sat., and all offices closed as the university shuts down the for holiday weekend. Since 2012, Common Ground has been coordinating services in order to help students who stay on campus feel some sense of community during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Join us for Dinner

Once again Common Ground, in partnership with the Chaplaincy and Dining Services, will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving dinner. This year's dinner will be in The Cellar at 5:00 p.m. on Wed. Nov. 21.  We currently have all the volunteers we need, but everyone who wants to dine with us must preregister to attend by completing this form.

Go Off Campus

On Fri., Nov. 24, transportation will be provided to Short Pump Town Center for the annual American tradition of Black Friday. Signifying the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, Black Friday is a day known for its large discount shopping opportunities. The shuttles will depart the UR Transportation Hub at 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m.; they will depart Short Pump Town Center at 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. International Education and Transportation Services fund this service.

Cooking Your Own Meals

If you don't have access to a microwave in your room or hall, one will be available on each side of campus for heating up food over the break. One will be located in the Whitehurst Game Room, and one will be located in the Westhampton Living Room. We appreciate your efforts to keep these areas clean for others who wish to use them.

Financial Hardships

If you receive need-based financial aid, will be staying on campus, and worry that you will not have sufficient funds to purchase food while the dining locations are closed over break, please contact Lisa Miles in Common Ground for assistance. There are a limited amount of $25 gift cards which can be given out to help with buying groceries. As of 11/14/2018 almost all of them have been claimed. So please plan to use your Dining dollars to stock at the ETC, and come to the free dinner on the 21st. And we will create a GroupMe at the dinner, if not before, for people to be in touch with others about possibly cooking together in the apartments or sharing resources.

What will be Open Over Break

Since most university staff have off from Wednesday, Nov. 21 until Monday, Nov. 26, many of the university buildings will also be closed for most or all of that time including the library and the Commons. The Weinstein Gym will be open most days. Make sure to check their individual websites for precise hours of operation. URPD will be on campus the entire time.
